About Weight Loss Surgery
What are the benefits from Surgery?
The expected benefits from a sleeve gastrectomy are very similar to all other modalities of bariatric surgery. One definite advantage of the sleeve gastrectomy over the laparoscopic gastric adjustable band is that there is an almost instant desirable metabolic affect with regards to diabetes.
Through a mechanism not totally understood at this time, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that after a sleeve gastrectomy or roux-en-y gastric bypass diabetes resolution is achieved. The same is not uncommon benefit for a patient that undergoes a banding procedure, but the mechanism is due to hormonal regulation after a substantial weight loss, whereas with the sleeve or bypass the mechanism is truly chemical or metabolic and occurs almost instantly regardless of weight loss.
